Colonel Ellsworth's final moment

This drawing depicts Colonel Ellsworth's death, ambushed by James Jackson. Private Brownell is the man carrying the long musket with bayonet, immediately in fromt of the colonel. Jackson is on the right, firing his double-barrel shotgun . Brownell killed Jackson immediately after the Colonel's murder, by shooting and then bayonetting him.

The unit, less Colonel Ellsworth continued on in battle, eventually meeting defeat at the Battle of Bull Run. The survivors (my great great grandfather included) were taken to various confederate prison camps for the duration of teh war.

George Webb Dodge may one of the two men descending the stairs after the Colonel.
