Another view of the classic 2400 volt delta power distribution lines in Scotia, California. FYI, a "delta" distribution system is probably the oldest form of power distribution, where there are only 3 hot wires and no ground or "neutral" wire carried along the 3 phase circuit. In a single phase connection, the transformer requires 2 hot wires to it, since all voltages are the same between each wire. This also requires 2 fuse cutouts per transformer, as you see here. Delta systems are still common in California but the majority of power distribution now days is the Wye system, which only requires 1 hot wire and a ground wire to the transformer. Due to the present economic situation the Pacific Lumber mill is now re-organized and the town of Scotia is now re-organizing toward an independent community. The power lines are likely to become municipally owned. They may not 'look like this' in the future! |
