Me and my brother Casey decided that since it wasn't raining yesterday, we would take a trip down to Greensboro Georgia and hunt portions of the old Georgia Railroad. The Georgia Railroad Company was chartered December 21, 1833, by a group of Athens citizens lead by James Camak. Their goal was to build a railroad from Athens to Augusta. Construction began in 1835, starting at Augusta. This portion ran from Augusta through to Atlanta. Less than 10 years ago, all of the original telegraph lines and poles still stood beside this track, but they are now long gone. MCI came through and installed buried cable to replace the telephone lines that were still in use back in the early 1990's. If you know where to look and look hard enough, you can still find remnants of the old telephone lines. Our first find of the day was the top of a Brookfield CD 151, laying in plain sight right on the rocks beside the tracks. We saw it just as we pulled up in the car. |
