10/7/2009 at 1:38 PM. Going west out of Ft. Garland, Colorado, I saw miles of this construction between Ft. Garland and Blanca. So what's up here? I could understand the multipart combined with a string of suspensions if they were built at different times. But why suspension strings of different lengths? If this is three-phase, shouldn't all three phases be at the same voltage? Or is this some kind of open delta setup? ----- David Dahle replied, and I quote with his permission: That sure had to be an odd looking line. It'd be interesting to see what company it was. The line voltage seems to be in the 30-50kV range. Here's my guess - it was originally built with the multi on top, but for lightning protection the line was converted to use a static line, and because moving the one phase down to the arm violated the necessary electrical spacing, the string on that side of the arm was lengthened. |
