A rear view of the Southern Pacific Railroad 'Red Electric' Wellsdale Substation near Corvallis, OR. in 1917. This photo shows the outdoor portion of the sub., viewing the myriad of multipart insulators, switches and transformers from the incoming 57,000 volt line. Inside the building was the rotary converter and related switchboards. The rotating motor-generator set produced 1500 volts DC on the 2 heavy cables shown leaving the building, that powered the trains along their overhead pick up wire. The stations were not automatic and required an operator on duty at all times. Today, only 3 of these buildings remain, none with any electrical equipment left. One has been converted to apartments. |
