Here is an old photo of two major electric railways crossing each other in Oregon, circa 1915-1920. Altho I have this photo posted in 'Vintage', I felt that the unique steel frame "wire catchers" mounted on the high voltage poles were DEFINATELY a line construction detail seldom seen, if ever! The 60kV power line of the Oregon Electric Railway, (using M-4325 multiparts) crosses over the 13.2kV (using M-2340 multiparts) line of the Southern Pacific RR "Red Electric" line. To ensure that IF the wires break over the crossing, the "catchers" are mounted on the same type insulators on the steel frames and the wires have a small catching attachment on them that is supposed to grab the wire sections and keep them from falling. You can imagine what a shower of sparks would occur if they DIDN"T work !!! I have never seen a device like them and if anyone has, I would like to hear about it. For more details about this, please go to the Vintage Photo album. |
