An old photo of an Oregon Electric Railway train. This was a posed photo at a station and shows the train crew in front of one of their typical 60 ft. wooden interurban cars. This type of car was called a "combine" since it was a combination of freight/baggage space in front, (notice the milk cans), and passenger seats in the rear. Most of their cars were built in the 1907 to 1913 era and were painted dark (Pullman) green with arched windows and stained glass upper panels. They had 2 plush observation cars and several sleeping cars. One observation car remains today, totally restored at the Western R.R. Museum near Rio Vista, CA. The line ran 102 miles from Portland to Salem and Eugene with a 40 mile branch line to Forest Grove. Passenger service quit in 1933 and some of the rails remain today in freight service.
