Paul Greaves and I recently met a long retired employee of the Spier Falls power plant near Glens Falls N.Y. who had saved several M-2250 Fred Locke specimens from inside the plant in the early 1970's during an upgrade. The plant built in 1902-03 supplied power to a line that used Fred Locke M-3062 insulators As far as I know these rare two part insulators were never used on any local lines and only in the plant itself on lower voltage applications. He was gracious enough to give one of the two specimens He had to Paul and I. Since the specimen was unmarked and I already had a similar marked one in my collection from Ohio, Paul kept it for his collection . The other specimen pictured above has marking 7-1 . Interestingly these insulators were cemented together and cemented to the cut off wood pins with sulfur. This is the only post 1902 Fred Locke multipart I know of where the insulator is held together with sulfur. Wether the cementing was done by the factory or the end user is unknown. This installation of the M-2250 Fred Locke is only the second reported use of these insulators . The other confirmed specimens with both the 6-1 and 7-1 markings came from an interurban electric railroad that ran from Dayton to Toledo, Ohio. I should mention the employee we met was the grandson of one of the men who built the plant and dam in 1902!!! |
