This line was constructed to be part of a new transcontinental toll line with this section being in the Denver-Salt Lake City link. I am old enough to remember the western two thirds of this line (Approx 300 miles). Based on my research there were two repeaters on this line between Denver and Salt Lake City. The line was built in sections with circuits being activated as the line progressed westward. This section of the line near the Colorado/Utah border was about 120 miles in length consisting of more than 4000 poles and was constructed beginning in the spring of 1928 with the first circuit being turned up Feb 6 1929. Line demolition began in the mid 1970's with large sections being torn down in 1980, 1990 and 1992. These photos are of the only remaining intact section of this line that is still serving a remote mining operation. I grew up in this area and have made hundreds of trips past the very poles in these photos. This line sparked my interest in open wire telephone. Photos taken about 2 weeks ago. |
