My brother, Casey Herron, informed me of a section of Telephone line that still runs parallel to a portion of the Georgia, Carolina and Northen (GC&N) Railroad that travels from Atlanta Georgia up into North Carolina. Organized in December, 1886 to build a rail line from Monroe, N.C., near Charlotte, to Atlanta, the GC&N began construction in North Carolina in 1887. The line was completed to a connection with the Georgia Railroad at Inman Park on the east side of Atlanta in 1892. The portion of line runs near Hull, Georgia with several poles still standing. There is also a portion of poles in Comer, Georgia but as far as we could tell, these are the only sections left as everything else going into South Carolina is now long gone. We took pictures of most poles, no rare glass, just your common Hemingray 40's & 42's, some clear Kerr's and Armstrongs, some plastic 154's and glass spools. Some of the poles were down in the woods and Casey did get to try out his newly constructed Insulator Grabber. This first picture is the pole nearest to the road, only a couple of pieces of glass still left. The wires are still connected between the poles, but they have not been active since the 1950's. Still fun to see the old poles are still standing after all these years!! Enjoy the pictures!! |
