Here you can see one antenna with base insulator on right side of the forward stack in this picture looking towards the stern (it's actually on the port side of the ship). The one on the left is missing its antenna. Also note the many guy wire strain insulators. I wonder if they did this because these guy wires were so close to a strong RF energy source? The devices on the left and right sides of the picture are optical range finders. Remember, this is 1930s technology, well before radar had a short enough wavelength to be used for accurate gun directing. Try using "view original" to see a close-up. Speaking of guns, notice the dents in the stack. They were caused by overpressure from the muzzle blast of the 16 inch main guns. Any gun that burns 540 pounds of propellant per round fired gets my vote. |
