Justin Martin brought a box of nearly identical Hemingray No.9's to the Spokane show for me to look at. All had the same embossing and all had olive swirls. This one however, had some severe flashover burns that made it stand out from the rest. Not as visible as the burn to the right, another burn of similar size is on the left side. Two more burns are on the back. I have a number of ponies in my collection showing a burn, but nothing like this. Flashovers usually occurred from lightning strikes along the line. The current surge caused a flashover all up and down the line until dissipated to ground. Judging by all the others I have seen over the years, this piece must have been very close to the actual strike, yet just far enough away to not be broken from the thermal shock of the flashover. Interesting piece of telephone history. |
