This shows the old San Joaquin river crossing of the Electra power line. When we tried to find the site of this crossing, we hardly expected the original towers to still be there, but there they were! These were erected in about 1900 (the old photo is from a 1901 issue of the Journal of Electricity). The top of the tower has been replaced, and the footings changed from redwood pilings to cement, but the main tower structure remains. Are there any older towers still standing anywhere in the world? |
