I had been wanting to build a Jacob's Ladder (technically known as a Climbing Arc Device) for quite a while but didn't know what to use that would insulate the arcing rods from ground and yet provide a sturdy mount for them. Then it hit me!....."You need to insulate? Why not use insulators!" I dug out these 2 odd insulators I got from Nathan Lamkey one time. I think they are bolt together stackers for busbars. I bought some metal L brackets, got the right size bolts and nuts and mounted them vertical on a frame on wheels, actually an electronic equipment rack. Then I bought a $1.29 tomato plant cage and cut out the steel wires for the arc rods, looped the lower ends to mount on the insulator bolts and it all came together. I used an old Miller Beer neon sign transformer that I had sitting around doing nothing and....ZAP-ZAP-ZAP ! Click NEXT for the results. |
