Here I tried to see how a linear polarizing filter might affect the reflections from the crown and dome of this old beehive. The left-hand shot has the filter set for maximum reflections. The right-hand shot was taken a few seconds later, with the filter set to minimize reflections. It seems that the filter eliminated most of the glare from the right side of the crown. However, the reflections on the left side are mostly unaffected. The colors seem a bit deeper on the right. I'll repeat the experiment when I get a circular polarizer, and will try it in a display case with strong backlighting. Sky conditions were clear, pictures taken at 6:39 PM CDT north of Chicago, IL. Sun was behind the neighbor's house so the lighting was indirect skylight. Equipment is a Nikon D70S, with my older 55 mm F3.5 non-AF macro lens, and a Vivitar 52 mm polarizing filter. This lens has taken some excellent pictures on my F3, although since it has to be manually focused, it's somewhat painful to use on the D70S, which has no focusing groundglass. |
