A photo of the main highway through Gold Beach, Oregon, on the S. Oregon Coast. The pic was taken in the early 1950's and shows the open wire line that belonged to the U.S. Coast Gaurd. This line ran from Crescent City Cal. to Port Angeles WA. and was made to look like an ordinary telephone toll line. But it was not just ordinary at all. The line carried important defense data and voice circuits and was built in 1941 as a part of a Pacific coast defense plan. The line carried four or sometimes 5 pairs and used clear Hemingray 42's or 45's insulators. The open wire is now gone but some of the poles(which are well preserved with tar) were shared with local phone companies, and are still standing using their wires. to see another town with the Coast Gaurd line running thru it click NEXT.
