New Haven, CT vicinity c.1870. If you look directly above the horse's head upon on the right is a telegraph pole. It's kind of hard to see however a crossarm is visible with two insulators (one on each side) and a darker one atop it. Quite possibly this was one of the main telegraphic routes to New York City at the time. It followed either the fenced roadway (to the right) or the turnpike that is seen in the foreground.
