Here are the ingredients and instructions for making mold paste. This is for iron blow-molds but I can't see much diference between this and what would be painted on the insides of old insulator molds. Note how thick and goopy this must be, and how the resulting baked-on varnish would be prone to scratching, chipping and abrasion.
