This red and black ant, wrongly called a fire ant by some is just another relative of the large black tree ant but is completely subterranean in nature and has a pretty nasty bite. Not as bad as the true fire ant, but still causes painful itching. Just one nest mound as big as a softball will pick a 10 pound snapper turtle shell clean in days.
