Here, we see "rubber chickens" and porcelain suspension insulaters insulating the same lines on the same pole. In my experience, this is a rather uncommon (or downright *RARE*) sight - you'll see "rubber chickens" being used by themselves, or you'll see suspension insulators being used by themselves, but this is the first time I've seen them being used together on the same pole, insulating the same line(s). Photograph taken in north Sacramento CA. USA on the morning of 09-20-08. (From an email I received on the afternoon of 09-21-08): "Hey there, This message is in response to your posting of a pole with suspensions and rubber chickens on the same pole. Here in Manitoba, that is actually becoming quite a common sight on those type of double dead ends. The linemen prefer to use the chickens, but they have to be under tension. We can't use them on the ones holding the jumpers because the weight of the suspensions holds it all in place from blowing too far side to side in the wind. A rubber chicken is too light and would defeate the purpose. Our new type of construction for 66KV actually uses entirely suspensions hanging from each end of the cross-arm with the centre phase on a rubber post type pole top pin but you will always see that chicken/suspension mixture on the double dead-ends. Hope that helps, {name omitted}" |
