Those rectangular things near the bottom of this photograph appear to be capacitors (or "capacitators" as some people call them, or "condensers" that is the old fashioned term) connected to 4.8KV distribution lines in north Sacramento CA. USA. I'm honestly not certain what those things on the second crossarm from the top are. (Edit 09-23-08 8:22pm PDT) I received an email today, explaining what those things on the second crossarm down from the top are. The sender's name & email address have been omitted to help protect his privacy. "Howdy from Texas! Those things on the second crossarm down from the top are called, Loadbreak fused cutouts, they would be used to fuse protect those capacitors you see below them on that pole mounted rack. They use the special Loadbreak design because if you have to disconnect those capacitors from the line you want the arc to extinguish itself in that elephant ear looking device hanging on the top side of the cutout body itself. Otherwise it will create a fireball that is hard to put out! Those capacitors can be mean little monsters!" |
