A power pole in Rockaway Beach, Oregon in 1932. The Mountain States Power Co. had just rebuilt this line a couple of years earlier. The line is along the main street of town and is also the Oregon Coast Highway 101. A double set of large Locke multipart insulators are shown on this 22,000 volt line to over-insulate due to salt air leakage. The top section of the pole is treated with either creosote or carbolineum to combat rot in the wet climate. The second crossarm is carrying 2300 volts and is painted yellow indicating high voltage. The two bottom crossarms are painted red indicating caution but low voltage (110/220 volts). These details were a strictly enforced set of specifications used by MSP's parent company, Standard Gas & Electric Co., part of the large Byllesby Engineering & Managemant Co. holding company of Chicago. The man and woman are seen walking west across the track and are heading for the Pacific Ocean beach, just a 1/4 block away, a tradition still enjoyed today in this popular beach town. |
