It literally has taken me about five years to finally get a photo of this street sign, located near Hayesville, NC. It is usually missing, and gets "liberated" within a few days of being affixed to the sign post. This particular time, it lasted all of two whole days before disappearing... Peckerwood Road connects between Cold Branch Road and Downing's Creek Road, both of which connect to US Route 64, to the east of Hayesville, North Carolina. Update 14 Sept 2008: I was in NC last week, and the local weekly newspaper (Clay County Progress) had an article about the sign theft, and how a stash of 22 signs, (mostly Peckerwood Road), were found in the woods in the nearby "town" of Shooting Creek. Apparently the same person (or persons) were stealing these signs and ditching them in the woods. So far the sheriff's department does not have an actual "suspect "yet. So it wasn't simply souvenir hunters as was originally suspected. FWIW, the sign was once again stolen and then replaced during the week I was there - the local authorities must keep a ready supply of them on hand (at around $90 cost each). Update @8 July 2010 I recently read that this road and a nearby creek (Peckerwood Creek) were named after a Cherokee Indian named Jim Peckerwood, who lived around the mid 1800s |
