Three insulators are shown, and of those three, two are quite difficult to find. If you are reading this right now, then you have likely already seen the above photo, meaning that my general description of the insulators for sale as being a trio of Canadian Diamond CD 154s is likely now superfluous. However, what you might not have noticed is that all three of these are different embossing styles, and the middle, and far left examples can be very difficult to turn up, even if you reside in Canada yourself! From the left to the right, the three pieces are as follows; 1 - [010] Diamond CD 154 in a dark straw or peach shade - this one is marked with a D inside of a Diamond, signifying the Dominion Glass Company. 2 - [050] Diamond CD 154 in a dark straw shade. This one is marked with a P inside a Diamond. The marking on this example is not currently attributable to any particular significance, although it is assumed that the piece is of Diamond-Flint or Dominion production. This piece is the second hardest to acquire of the three. With thin, sharp-edged wire ridges, and an overall scarce occurrence on lines across Canada, this piece is difficult to obtain period, let alone in relatively good condition as this piece is. I would rate this specimen as NM- as far as these go. The only damage to speak of is an area of shallow, thin flakes on the front, upper wire ridge, about 1 1/2" long, and two 1/8", shallow upper wire ridge flakes on the rear half. It would be difficult to find an example of this scarce insulator in any better condition! 3 - [070] Diamond CD 154 in dark straw. This example is the hardest of the three to obtain. It is simply marked with a lonesome Diamond on the front skirt, and has round drip points, as can be seen. In my 8 years of collecting, I have only ever pulled perhaps 10 of these pieces from poles in a hundred kilometres of Ontario Canadian Pacific rail line, and I would say only 3 of those 10 rated at NM or better. I have heard of a couple examples coming from out west, but all in all, I would say there aren't many more than 3 or 4 dozen of these out there. Made in a similar (if not identical) mould as the Diamond P shown to it's left in the photo, this piece is also very prone to damage, making an even smaller number of VNM examples available in the hobby. This one is one of the better examples I pulled that day back in 2004. The damage on this example is limited to one 1/2" long by 1/4" tall chip on the right, upper wire ridge - right at the mould line. There is also a very strange fan crack of some sort on the rear, upper wire ridge. It's very shallow, probably 1/16" if that, and looks more like a stain on the surface of the glass than an actual flake. It measures 3/8" long by 3/16" tall. I doubt you will have too many other chances to obtain one of these, and likely none too many on the rounded drip Diamond P, either. I'm asking $18 U.S. plus shipping on all three of these scarce, and yet "common", Canadian 154s. I accept personal cheques from any member of ICON, or anyone I've dealt with before. Please feel free to email me with any questions, or for more photos. Also, please check out my "unsold" stock in the "Not Sold" folder, and combine multiple purchases to save shipping! All the best! |
