"Frankenstein" Switches In Service

These 3 old rocker type line break switches are shown in use on a Portland General Electric 12.5kV line in western Oregon. Many power enthusiasts refer to them as "Frankenstein" switches since they look like they should be in a high voltage laboratory or an early sci-fi movie. Several sets of them are still in service in this area but since they are over 60 years old, they are being slowly replaced. To see a closer shot of an identical set not in service, click NEXT.
