This old stone building, which is still standing, is the Sellwood converter station in Portland, OR., that was used to convert long distance A.C. power to 600 volts D.C. power to the overhead pick-up wire for the trolleys. This fortress-built building is now over 100 years old and several of us are interested in getting it listed on the National Register. It is still owned by P.G.E. Co, the regional power utility. The large bronze sign on the front says, "Oregon Water Power & Railway Co. 1905". A wooden streetcar station is shown along with a 10,000 volt line pole with aqua glass CD 289 Fred Locke insulators on it... (they both are long gone). I can't explain the pinkish tint to the photo!
