From an 1889 magazine is a depiction of the harrowing conditions (maybe, sabotage?) as the United States fought its Civil War.

The United States Military Telegraph Corps constructed more than 15,000 individual lines in the field during the Civil War years. This corps was established with the assurance of continuing communication/operation to Union War leaders. In general, this corps consisted mostly of civilians.
