After a bone-jarring 10-mile four-wheel drive ride, plus an uphill hike at nearly 11,000 feet elevation, I found this purple pony just barely poking out of the dirt and pine needles as I sat down to catch my breath for the umpteenth time!!! The line we were hiking that used these consisted of two insulators on dog ears per pole. It was a phone circuit built just under an arm on a turn of the century 10kV powerline. I know that the phone circuit and its insulators were removed and thrown aside sometime around or before 1939, as some of the replacement poles have date nails as such, and these poles show no signs of nail scars from the dog ears.
