Those were the simpler days during snowstorms like you see here where you hear yourself think. In other words, there was absolute silence as the snow was falling here in Vermont 1900. Other than the sounds of nearby animals or a distant railroad train, pure and crisp silence and solitude prevailed.

In addition...note the vintage telephone open-wire line on the right. There were a lot of Ma & Pa telephone companies in VT through the 1960s and it is possible this was one of them. Otherwise this village was served by the New England Telephone & Telegraph Company. NET&T Co. maintained open wire subscriber loops in isolated instances in rural areas right up to the AT&T divesture in 1984.
