Shown is this great photograph of the small town I spent my MOST important youthful years in (1967-1970) (South Weymouth, MA) taken in 1951. Also see the accompanying real photo near this intersection [id=207888918] A nice red Fresnel glass firebox light can be seen in the foreground as well as then-brand new GE Form 109 mercury vapor streetlights in the background. I remember ALL of these streetlights like good old friends! The fire box light was removed sometime in the 1960s. However in 1990 I was very fortunate that the Massachusetts Electric Company crew (whom I was already friends with; thanxx Jack Cameron!) gave me the vintage c.1950 fixtures you see shining in the background. They were still warm from the sun when handed to me from the bucket truck lineman (Jack!) doing the work!! Lights I always remembered ever since knowing how to look up. Lights I prize in my collection! These are lighted memory lane collectibles at their best, like many, many other favorite streetlights in my collection! These tried-and-true 400 watt mercury vapor fixtures from approximately 40 years earlier were being replaced by modern high pressure sodium lunimaires. Most of the poles you see in this photo still stand (FYI) although the distribution was converted to 13.8kv a couple decades ago. |
