I was out on another hunt with my pal Dave Fleishman. Our target this trip was the Craigmont Copper mine near Merritt, B.C.,which was at peak production in the late 50's early 60's. Low copper prices caused it's closure in the early 70's. Dave had spotted these unusual switches on an earlier trip, but this time we brought the right equipment to recover the switches and some large multi-parts. The first switches are Dominion Cutout Co. Ltd. 's with a brown porcelain body and a stunning white porcelain handle. I have never before seen any switch in such lovely contrasting colours. Also unusual was the stated capacity of the switch, rated at 50 amps and 7500 volts. Quite a bit removed from the usual 30 amp, 2500 volt units. The mounting bracket has a capacity tag that reads Dominion Cutout Co. Ltd., Toronto, Ont. Canada, Patented 1937, 50 Amps, 7500 volts, Cat. No. 5313-1. The 3 switches were relocated to the Insulator Field in Merritt where they are now displayed. The next switches are again different because of their size. While the average switch measures 10"L x 4"D x 3"W, these monsters mfgd. by / for Line Material Co. were 14"L x 7"D x 5"W, and they weigh about 18 lbs each. There were 3 LM switches mounted on the crossarm, but one had cracked and water freezing and thawing had split the unit. As I was dismanteling the hardware, the porcelain shell separated and fell 25 feet from the elevated platform with 2 loud explosions of shattering porcelain. Poor Dave who was down below the platform thought his time had come. Very fortunately, he had remained well clear of the area below the work zone and avoided the flying fragments. At the end of the day, we had recovered several insulators, many spools and brackets, 3 large multi-parts, and these 5 unusual but great looking cut-out switches, and a fun time was had by all concerned.
