I posted a pic here last summer with the story of The Poles of 1900. Here is a pic of an actual pole that we found all the original bits and peices for along the line, not an easy task, a labor of love that took a whole summer of hiking to accomplish. Note the details, such as the close conductor spacing, the side pin used in a 10Kv power application, the support at the top for the barbed wired lightening protection, and the plain #9 wire tied directy to the outside pins for additional protection. The insulators are blue ink-stamped Fred Locke U-925's, and also see the two lag bolts joining the crossarm to the pole. Every tenth pole had a heavy copper lead connecting to the barbed wire, and running down the pole to ground. A very strange-looking early power set-up that was replaced because of improper conductor spacing after only two years. Most of the materials were salvaged is why it was so difficult to find everything we needed for a complete reconstruction. There is a small can tacked onto the pole in the middle for a bird feeder, and a WGM -made bottle to the right sunning himself to turn purple. |
