I took this photo years ago and am not sure why I tilted the camera this way. This old pole in Portland, OR. has duplicate 120/240 volt secondary crossarms serving the same neighborhood. The top crossarms (note the split arms with the broken piece laying on the wires!) belong to PGE (Portland General Electric). The lower crossarms belong to Pacific Power & Light. For many years, the two companies competed for service in Portland on shared poles. In the 1960's the Oregon Public Utility Commission outlawed this type of duplication and each company was assigned it's own service area in Portland, as it remains today. A PP&L 115 Kv. line runs across the street, on at least, 85 ft. poles. Note the old porcelain Bell System telephone sign on the store....another thing of the past! |
