The municipal light plant in this quaint seashore community south of Boston was formed in 1894 after purchasing the existing 94 customers, wires, poles and all other utility property from the Weymouth Light and Power Company. Upon doing so, a town-wide conversion to updgrading the system commenced. In most instances square chestnut poles were installed throughout the town. These lasted for many decades. It is believed the last one was removed from service in the late 1970s. The last survivor laid at rest without any respect (except for mine!) in the utility's pole yard until the mid 1980s when it was carted away with other retired poles. The former chestnut pole appeared to be in suberb physical condition (to me!) from top to butt-bottom where it was pulled from the ground. If it was only "seemingly" a half-ton lighter I could have brought it home...given to me no doubt for free... |
