Now that I have created my own word "cherrified",you might point your peepers at this very cherry Hemingray No 12 that is now about 90% encased in wood. The tree was cherry and they are a fairly slow grower but the annular rings are pretty wide, so it was located in a prime spot that contributed to very fast growth. The tree itself grew fast enough to actually encase the sidepin that was nailed to it rather than just break it off. In the next picture you'll see the bottom crosscut view of this piece where they cut thru the pin and exposed the original square nail. This picture shows the insulator sticking partially out of the heartwood, so this piece was completely encased and totally hidden and found only by pure luck. I am really glad the log splitter didn't break this piece! |
