You have probably heard about these neat little insulators but possibly never saw a picture of one in service. Here is a roadside view of the majestic scenery in Grants Pass, OR during the 1940s with a communications wire strung in the foreground. Basically, these were two white porcelain insulators with mating halves. Tied together the pair provided a round hole in their center for the wire to pass through. No tie wires were used. The line was simply draped through these insulators such that if a fallen tree or branch fell upon it the rest of the wire would simply take up the slack with a minimum chance of line breakage.
