It's been a couple months but i have finally got around to posting this. After we became bored with the insulators we were finding around columbus, OH we decided to go on a little trip to Maryland and Pennsylvania. Along the way we must have stopped at 10-15 different antique stores, all of them had insulators but none of them were anything interesting. Our destination was ********, PA (location not given out due to star CD 145's) a nice little town on the Youghiogheny river. Along the way we stopped in many towns that were along the railroad, Perryopolis (i think), Cumberland MD, and Uniontown. In all the towns we went to we saw insulators, in Uniontown we found a CD 122 hemingray (a first for us) and a CD 134 brookfield (also a first for us) and saw a whitalltatum no-5 but we couldn't get it. We will return for it and the other signals we missed, the other toll might reunite with it's former companion on my display shelf but i think we will probably let it stay on it's perch. One of our stops was to be connelsville, but we never made it there for some reason or we did and i just can't remember... Just outside of perryopolis we found one of our targets, the still active railroad following the river. Unfortunately, the line still looked to be powering the signals and such so we were forced to leave 2-3 very odd looking CD 133's up on their pole. I still remember right where the insulators are located, perhaps next time we will have better luck with this section of the line. We had brought our bikes with us on the trip. Our idea was that we were going to hunt along the western MD rail trail and the Allegheny trail. Oddly enough, we never hunted along the Allegheny. When we arrived at our campground we found that our campsite was atop a long hill, and we couldn't carry all our junk we brought with us up it so we had to find another camp site. We did, but when we were backing into it i noticed wee seemed to be heading for a rather large tree. I assumed dad knew what he was doing, but when i turned around sure enough we plowed into the tree. Both bikes were smashed, the rims mostly and the frame on dads snapped. We had to improvise because we didn't have any tools for fixing this sort of problem so we just sorta jumped on the bikes until they bent back into shape. They still worked, but they weren't too reliable so we never hunted along the path. Atleast we could still hunt the active railroad. We walked looked at only around 10 poles because it was getting dark, but we noticed some type of odd tall slender CD 145's. They were mixed in with B's and stuf so they were easy to sot, and we grabbed one. The insulator fell to the ground with a hard smacking and clinking noise, but didn't appear to have suffered any damage. Now it was really dark, and the trains were comeing and going about one or 2 every 10 minutes, so i grabbed a little ceramic thing off a downed pole and we went back to the campsite. I don't know why, but i left the mud insulator on a table somewhere, i wish i had kept it now. The line also had a lot of multiparts, but i didn't fell the need to try and get them eather, what was i thinking??? Anyways, when we got to the campsite we looked at our finds. The 145 was coated with so much train soot, the soot took on a 3rd dimensions and a dark orange color. I figured it would nver clean off, but it was the first star insulator i had ever found, awesome! There were also a ton of spiral groves out there, but again i said "no, those are common, don't bother with them" Holy crap was i stupid!!!!! We also did some white water rafting, it lasted for 5-7 hours but it was just as fun as looking for insulators. I even found one in the river when we stopped to take a break, i left it in plain view for any one else passing through. When we left and got to little orleans we did a little hunting, found shards of a hemingray 44! I wish we had dug there, but stupid me didn't bother too. We looked around on the Western MD over by Sidling hill, hoping to find crebs and to my amazement we did!!! But that enthusiasm quickly vanished, as i noticed the nearly 40 foot pole the insulator (and another olive green 152) were on were still wired in, and if we somehow removed the wire it would fall onto a live railroad below. "sigh" We did get a couple nice B 145's, and there were again some spiral groves that i ignored (don't ask what in the world i was thinking... i don't know eather) But we still had fun. Along the way back we noticed another line gone bikepath, but this one had no telephone line. Instead, we started seeing very, VERY long poles on the ground. Eventually we came to one with a couple multies on or near it, nice! We found one good one, big chip but it would be my first multipart find so i wanted it. Couldn't get it, wouldnt budge off it's pin. Well, we had fun and that's what its all about, i have memorized where all those spirla groves and miltiparts are so we will be back next year, but first i'm gona have to ask where i can get my hands on some crebs! Here's what we got, enjoi. -Bryan |
