I was born in Brockton, MA ten years after this photo was taken (apparently a secondary or fire alarm service line fell across this intersection). The "Quincy Market" street corner scene as you see it remained unchanged through the time we moved to Weymouth, MA in late September 1967. I still vividly recall this intersection (like most others in Brockton!). The only thing different from the photo through 1967 was that the upright streetlight pole on the left that removed in favor of a mercury vapor pole mounted variety. And that the overhead electric distribution (Brockton Edison Company) was simplified as the primary voltage was increased to 4,160 V. If you look closely at the apartment building the electric distribution line pararelled it towards the right. In fact, Brockton Edison installed (in the later 50s) crossarms that extended a bit outwards toward the street. **I always wondered as a kid how grand it would have looked seeing this line construction right out one of the nearby apartment windows!!** To beat the band...there were small 4kv brown saddle top porcelain insulators were of a top rest (very rarely seen in those days around here!!) atop the crossarms next to the apartment building (with the killer view!). That's what some of my dreams were made of. And they still are...it is great "going back there" while in a deep sleep! Photo taken at the intersection of Warren Avenue and Pleasant Street, looking northeasterly. The Central Fire Station was a half-mile up the street...hence, the culmination of the fire alarm cables and wires as you see. They were placed underground by 1955. FYI...Those small top-rest uniparts were JD's. I've loved top rest uni's ever since "discovering" and once "wondering" about what their tops looked like. Thanks for looking and listening ;-) Sincerely, Joe Maurath, Jr. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ |
