This is the old Railroad station in Bangor, Maine. I'm not sure of the date, but I think it came down in the early 60's. There's a little shopping mall in it's placetoday . I used to hang around there in the 50's just watching the trains come and go, sometimes hitching a ride in one of the boxcars for a ride north for a couple of miles. This was pre-insulators. I can't even imagine the glass around this station in it's hayday. I do remember trains coming and going almost around the clock and lots of telephone wires everywhere. The noises and smells of this station and others like it bring back boyhood memories to me. I've been interested in trains since I was about 8 or 10 years old. There were lots of hobos hanging around too. One had to watch out for them. I'm not sure why today, but we were afraid of them, more so than the train people. |
