Back in the turn-of-the-century days paved roads were very rare...if not non-existant here in the US. Here is a steam-powered roller once used to flatten otherwise very rutted, muddy and bumpy roadways. These machines became ever so more popular for paving once automobiles made their nearly-overnight appearance by 1910.
