The tar paper completely surrounds the cardboard inner box. the seam where the wrap meets was glued shut and then the loose ends folded over on top. Here is a shot of the tar paper unfolded before I cut it open. It is pretty amazing that the paper was intact and pliable (and still waterproof) even after being exposed to the elements for most of the 55 years since it was put in the crate.
