After taking one of the boards off the top of the crate, there is a layer of tarpaper that completely surrounds the inner carboard box. Here you see the tarpaper pulled back from one side of the top to expose the cardboard. The cardboard top was close with 8 copper brads (big staples), four near each end. You can see the holes where they have been removed.
