Superb view of what this sleepy but growing midwestern town looked like about 100 years ago! Further imagine all of the colorful insulators that adorned the poles in this photo...on *both* sides of the unpaved roadway! Many specially colored insulators (amber, blue and crystal...the latter were clear but soon turned sun-colored-turned purple) were ordered by electric and telephone companies during the 1890s through the 1920's, particularly in Kansas and neighboring states. These were supplied by the Hemingray Glass Company and the special colors were intended to identify specific wires. With all of the pole line wires in this photo I have no doubt that some of these colored might have been used here......;-) |
