I first learned of the existence of this particular Western Union sign back in 1986. It was used on the bicycles that the messengers rode to deliver messages. See Crown Jewels article for write up

It took me about 15 years to actually find my first one. I have a small collection of vintage bicycles and I thought this was a neat go-with that loosely tied insulators and bicycles together. From what I have observed, these tended to get really banged up and scratched because they were mounted on the bicycle on the top bar from the seat to handlebars. This one really doesn't have any scratches. It does have some porcelain loss on the ends. This definitely looks better in person and could be cleaned up better. I haven't taken the time to do anything with it. Sign is double sided and measures 2 3/4" wide and 13" long. The holes on the top are original to the manufacture of the sign. Real tough item. I'll bring this to the Maryland Line show this Saturday for a better no obligation look. Price $50.00. Send me an email if I should bring it along!
