When all of those single open-wires of the days of 'yore came "to an end" (physically) it is my knowledge that they were often terminated on the line wire as dead-ends on double-mounted or "buck" crossarms. From there an insulated wire led to a weather-protected wooden junction box (see photo) whereby further connections could be made to customers, switchboards as well as underground conduits, enclosed twisted cable pairs, etc.
