This is another photo of a suspension style arc lamp street light. These were very popular during the 1890-1910 era. This fixture like most other arc lights was reeled in or lowered to the ground via a pulley mechanism for periodic carbon rod renewals. Note the long mast arm from which this streetlight was suspended from. This photo is circa 1900 (perhaps in Philadephia?) and clearly shows a CD 280 insulator atop the fixture with two white porcelain spools where the wires entered. By 1912 tungsten (incandescent) lightbulbs were greatly improved and their much higher luminous efficiency and long life gradually superceded older arc light installations. Retrofit kits were offered by GE and other arc light manufacturers whereby the arc light fixture innards could be removed and easily upgraded by installing an incandescent lamp socket; retaining the original (exterior) of the street light fixture. |
