On Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 9th, 2007, the winds began to blow. Not too badly, about 45-50 mph. I looked out the livingroom window which gives onto the Insulator Field. Everything was looking good, although a few strings of suspension insulators were visibly blowing / swaying back and forth. The winds continued through the night, and reached velocities 70-75 mph. As dawn approached, I ventured out to see if there had been any damage. One of the multi-part hitching post displays had been blown flat, and this suspension rack got a new twist. The temperatures had been above freezing and the ground was soft and wet. We are now at -12 F [-25c], so I don't think the display will be changing much till the temperatures moderate some. All other telegraph insulators remained held in place on their keeper nails, and very fortunately, nothing was damaged. |
