Yes, it seems paradoxical, that you use water soaked wood tools to work with glass. Jill and I had the honor and fun of attempting to make a simple paperweight while visiting Wilkerson Glass. The oval shape is formed from rotating the rod in a water soaked wooden "mold". I'm sure this process has been in use for hundreds of years...
