Pacific Power has been busy replacing this old river crossing power line the last few months. The crossing is in Portland, Oregon. This view is looking east across the Willamette (will-lamm-et) River near downtown Portland. The middle towers are situated on Ross Island. The total length of the line crossing is around 3500 ft. The old towers, see close-ups in the following pix, were built by the Northwestern Electric Co. ca. 1915, a Pacific Power predecessor in this area until 1947. It was a 2 circuit 66,000 volt line but in more recent times, one side was cut dead and the other side upped to 115 kv, by adding extra suspension discs. I had looked at this line since I was a kid and became obsessed with getting some pix of it before it is gone. My friend, a photographer, and I just happened to be visiting a newly opened high rise medical bldg., located right in line with the towers, where we took most of the following pix.
