I was in the car today riding with my parents. We just got done with breakfast, and were going to a garage sale to look at an air compressor. I am a beginning collector, and as usual, I was looking up at the lines. I live in florida, and there is no glass what so ever, anywhere where I am. Plenty of porcelain though. Anyways, we were riding along, and I happened to look at the ground and see an insulator. Without thinking, I blurt out, "INSULATOR, DAD, CAN I GET IT??" He pulls over and I jump out. I cross the busy road, and start walking back. It turns out it was farther back that I thought, but I was determined to get it. My heart was racing, because It would be my first wild insulator find. I'm walking along, and I see this hole, like a cave in of the road or something, or a drainage ditch, and of coarse I avoid it. Just then, I see the insulator. I realize it is across a ditch on the side of the road, and its filled with water. I have to find a way to get over there I tell myself. So I start walking back. Just then, I fall into the cave in hole, and I'm up to my chest in water, but I haven't even touched the bottom of the hole yet. I stop myself from falling anymore, and pull myself up. I get out of the hole, and see that I'm soaked. My parents saw the whole thing, and they wondered what happened. I told them as I was shaking in fear. Finally, I find a way to the insulator, and my parents say, "That broken thing, no, you don't want that." I said, "Yes I do." I look in the brush and see an insulator bonanza. I guess they just replaced all the insulators on the poles recently. I said, "Well, can I have a smaller one." There like, "I guess." So I grab a small one, and I'm on my way. I realize that it is rubber, so I find another bonanza at another pole and grab a porcelain insulator. My parents were unhappy about this, but they didn't say anything. Anyways, the rubber is an Ohio Brass Lightning Arrestor with rubber fins, and the porcelain is an american, with two broken fins. Oh well, I can always go back, and get more, actually, I plan to because there is some great hardware there too. But maybe from the experience, God was trying to tell me not to collect insulators, or maybe it was just a bad case of good luck and bad luck at the same time!! Note: I will post pictures tomorrow, because I haven't taken any pics yet! |
